We will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of carpenter and interior architect Markku Kosonen with an exhibition at Onoma’s Galleria 360 in spring 2025.The exhibition Wood lives (Trä lever / Wood lives) presents some of Kosonen’s rarely seen larger works and examples of his art from his family’s collections, and pays tribute to Kosonen’s uncompromising relationship with wood as a material. Most of the works are for sale.

Markku Kosonen’s daughter Emma Kosonen writes:

“Markku Kosonen was a carpenter, interior architect and artist whose life’s work was in many ways intertwined with wood. Markku Kosonen’s work was inspired by the many ways in which he lived and worked. Markku used not only the countless “waste woods” discarded by industry, but also different parts of the tree: branches, roots and bark. Markku was also an inspiring and versatile advocate for wood, who liked to provoke and provoke his listeners and readers – with irony and humour – to think about wood and the use of wood from different perspectives. At the heart of Marku’s thinking was always doing things differently. He was not satisfied with existing solutions, but questioned and challenged: ‘could this be done differently’?

Markku often liked to compare the growth of a tree with that of a human being: both start from a seed, grow slowly and reach full maturity at around 80 years of age. Markku had already grown into a sturdy log by the time he was 65, but not quite to his full height.

Markku was one of the initiators and an active participant in the Fiskars artist community and for the last ten years he also lived in the old chicken house he restored in Fiskars.”
